There will always be darkness and shadows in the Underground. Where the people do not watch, there are the places they forget exist. And rats thrive when you forget they exist. In a nook in a cranny in a shadow, the rats congregate. A chaotic rabble is quietened by a leader tapping a glass.
“My fellow rats. We were betrayed. The heathen Kurson Castle tarnished the name of the Esoteric Order. He falsely claimed to have communed with the Great Rat to cause more bloodshed and harm. He is a heretic, and we good people, we good rats, have nothing more to do with him. For we have an actual revelation! I have seen the Great Rat in Its wonderous spirit. I feel enlightened. I feel reborn. I see now we are on the correct path. We were not meant to own land. We were not meant to control territory. For anywhere a rat walks is there territory. Anywhere a rat can dream of, it can walk. And a rat can dream of anywhere.”
The rabble yells in support of their leader. He pauses to take in the praise.
“But one we must never forget, my rats, is that we are kind. We are ambassadors of the Great Rat's kindness. If you see a heretic in trouble. They are not a heretic in that moment, they are someone in need of the Great Rat's support, and we should be the ones to deliver this kindness. We are not evil. We are not cursed. We are gifted. It is our duty to share this gift, in hope that others can see the way of the Great Rat and continue gifting this kindness to others.”
The crowd cheers. And then they disperse. Ready to carry out the Great Rat's will.
Weeks, months, years later, Edward returns to the archives. He keeps a book here: History of the Order. It describes the actions the Order has taken, and the wisdoms of the Great Rat. Every day it could grow as the good deeds of the rats spread further: across both Overground and Underground. Edward takes his pen and writes down the newest tales. When he finishes writing, he looks back at where it all began. A picture of the Great Rat worshipped long before the Order was established. He shall never be forgotten again.
