Final Whisper

“My child...”

It was like a whisper on the wind, too quiet to hear and then gone. Even in the darkest hour of the night, Mother Darkness could not come here - Overground. That was what she had always believed.

Hidden Depths

The Underground – Overground – Principality? - settles, eventually. Aurelia is calmed, Eden and Micah older now (how do they grow so quickly), and when Adela tells her daughter about her plans, she smiles and nods. There is a restlessness in Adela Sterling. Some weight has left her, and with it, an old nature reignited.

An Unforgettable Moment

As secretaries, Alexis and Constance worked at Caput. Not just the Caput of the Underground, the little station tucked away behind Terminus with the old, drab carpets, nor just the Caput of the Overground, the long-abandoned and now-reclaimed tower that stood above Principality city. They worked in both Caputs, now with new, bright carpets by order of Director Mirax Caspian.

Listening

When he takes their first steps onto the sand of the desert Overground, Amandine does so in the same way that he did on that first, bright, terrible, beautiful day: clutching fast to the hand of Nikola Dobos, half a step behind his best friend. There is no sun, this time, and they are not fleeing from the threat of maybe-real bombs, which means that he can take the time to look, to see, to watch where they are coming from and what they are stepping out into.

Ash's contribution to the chronicle

On the back of the paper Ash sends to the archives is part of a list of the dead. The names are printed neatly, bureaucratically, as if they had never been anything more than letters on a page. Some are struck through roughly, others ticked off. Most are unmarked. There has been so much death; too much to keep up with.

Editor's Note

I first met Constance J. Delaware almost a century ago, yet the memory of her first impression remains as clear as if it were yesterday. She asked me: “Does the Overground have a Director?”

I thought long on whether or not to publish this biography, for it is not about Avgust: it is about Constance. It is about her journey to understand herself through understanding him, and says far more of the author than the subject. As such it is both a vital part of the history of Pr…

Azriel, meaning ‘angel of god’. God, meaning ‘that which lies above’.

Azriel’s mother had always been praying.

The sand is soft, and everywhere. It’s in their hair, in their shoes. It blankets the expanse of ground from here to the horizon. The sun is setting and the world is golden. A breeze blows slowly over the dunes, passing gently across Azriel’s skin. It feels like their mother’s touch.

The tunnels are quiet, now.

The stations still see the bustle of work, the Overground still the humming of life. But the cavern systems, the nooks and crannies and caves and chasms, those that lie in the near-forgotten depths of the Underground… they lie still. Silent.

There will always be darkness and shadows in the Underground. Where the people do not watch, there are the places they forget exist. And rats thrive when you forget they exist. The machinery rolls on, of course. The gentle whir of ventilation, the rhythmic clanking of the pipes, the hum of the lights that never quite succumb to inattention - Bibere will never be silent. But somehow, at last, it’s… peaceful.
