Alexis Knight Eternity

As secretaries, Alexis and Constance worked at Caput. Not just the Caput of the Underground, the little station tucked away behind Terminus with the old, drab carpets, nor just the Caput of the Overground, the long-abandoned and now-reclaimed tower that stood above Principality city. They worked in both Caputs, now with new, bright carpets by order of Director Mirax Caspian.

So the beautiful park outside seemed the only natural place for their wedding.

It had been almost a year of frenzied planning, more evenings of strife than either could recall, and more than one tear shed between Constance's proposal on the anniversary of the Emergence and today, the anniversary of the day they'd met. Still, when the pair looked at each other for the first time in their wedding dresses, it was immediately obvious that it had all been worthwhile.

Alexis' hands were trembling as she wrapped them around Constance's own, just to realise that she was trembling, too. She looked up, past the pink gown her fiancee wore that so perfectly contrasted with her own, cast in deep purple, and to her face where they found one another's eyes.

They smiled at one another, and the whole world around them seemed to melt away into nothingness. They were together. They would stay together. That was all that mattered now.

“I do,” said Constance. After a moment to let the officiant speak, Alexis responded in kind.

They let a moment more pass like that, holding each other, staring at each other. The path they had walked together since that fateful day three years ago had lead here at last. They'd both doubted it in their own time, and yet here they were.

In unison, they stepped forwards, put their arms around one another, and kissed.
